This fix is super-easy and should work in Windows 7 and Vista as well. The use case here was a computer that had been massively and severely infected by malware had a proxy server set in the Internet Explorer internet settings. Every time I unchecked the proxy server, it would just reappear. A note at the bottom of the window said that some settings were being managed by the Administrator. The fix? Be the Administrator.

  1. Navigate to c:\windows\program files(x86)\internet explorer
  2. Right-click on iexplorer.exe and select “Run as administrator”
  3. Click on the gear, select Internet Options then the connections tab
  4. Click on LAN Settings
  5. Uncheck Use Proxy Server and click OK

QED.
